Unveiling Da Nang's Hidden Gems: Discovering the Lesser-Known Treasures

Son Nguyen Minh
Da Nang, nestled along Vietnam's stunning central coast, is renowned for its pristine beaches, picturesque landscapes, and bustling cityscape. While popular attractions like the Marble Mountains and My Khe Beach draw countless visitors, this vibrant city has even more to offer. In this blog post, we invite you to explore the lesser-known, hidden gems of Da Nang.

From cultural landmarks to natural wonders, these off-the-beaten-path destinations promise to provide a unique and authentic experience of Da Nang.

1. Bai Rang Beach (Bãi Rạng)

Escape the crowded beaches and discover the untouched beauty of Bai Rang Beach. Tucked away in a serene cove, this hidden gem offers a tranquil and secluded seaside experience. Sink your toes into the soft golden sands, listen to the gentle lapping of the waves, and bask in the sun's warm embrace. With just 15 minutes drive from city center, whether you're seeking relaxation or a peaceful spot for a beach picnic, Bai Rang Beach is a slice of paradise waiting to be discovered.

2. Van Village (Làng Vân)

Van Village, a small village nestled deep in the mountains, holds a poignant history that dates back centuries. In the past, those afflicted with leprosy were shunned by society and forced to live in seclusion, seeking refuge far away from prejudice. Van Village became their final sanctuary. However, as leprosy became curable and those affected could integrate back into society, the village was abandoned. With no human inhabitants, untouched by tourism development, and free from commercialization, Van Village retains its pristine and raw beauty.

To reach this secluded village, you can take one of the following routes from the city center:

  • Head to Nguyen Tat Thanh Beach, hire a boat, and it's just a 30-minute journey.

  • Ride a motorbike to Hai Van Pass, park at the base of the pass, and hike up to the village along the mountainous trail.

  • The easiest but most dangerous route is through the train tunnel. If you choose this path, make sure to inquire about the train schedule, bring a flashlight, and stick to the side of the tunnel for safety.

3. Dong Dinh Museum (Bảo tàng Đồng Đình)

Dong Dinh Museum is situated in the Son Tra Peninsula area, on the left side of the road leading to Linh Ung Pagoda. Spanning an expansive area of 10,000 square meters, it is one of the three museums in Da Nang that have been granted permission to be constructed and operated within the Son Tra National Forest.

The museum derives its name from the abundance of Dong Dinh trees surrounding it. Dong Dinh trees, belonging to the fig family, are predominantly found in the Son Tra forest area and serve as a prominent feature in the ecological landscape. Stepping into the museum, visitors are greeted with a refreshing and serene ambiance, blending seamlessly with the natural mountainous surroundings. Such is the tranquility of the museum that it has earned the alternative, poetic name of "The Garden of Memories."

4. Nam O Reef (Rạn Nam Ô)

Nam O Reef measures an astounding 300 meters in length and 2 hectares in breadth. Huge boulders covered with moss, golden sand, and a great expanse of blue sky create the magnificent environment of this spot. However, a genuinely romantic tale is concealed underneath its stunning beauty.

According to legend, a couple who had been given the task by the Jade Emperor to level the mountains and regain the sea slipped and fell while moving the rocks. The Da Nang Nam O Reef was created at that time and has persisted to the present.

The Nam O Reef consists of two main coral reefs: Rạn Cả and Rạn Con. While Rạn Con exudes a gentle beauty, Rạn Cả boasts rugged and jagged rock formations that add to its allure. These contrasting elements create a mesmerizing spectacle, where the gentle and the rugged intertwine to form a truly unique seascape.

5. Hoa Trung Lake (Hồ Hòa Trung)

Hoa Trung Lake is located approximately 20 kilometers from the city center. Originally, it was a man-made lake created to supply water for agriculture and daily life in the surrounding villages.

Unlike other indoor tourist attractions in Da Nang, Hoa Trung Lake is an outdoor and completely natural destination, so it is essential to choose the right time to visit. The months of September and October are particularly beautiful. During this time, the lake enters its dry season, and the lush green grass transforms into a flat, meadow-like landscape, making it an ideal camping spot. You can arrange to visit in the early morning when dewdrops still cling to the young branches, immersing yourself in the refreshing ambiance. Alternatively, you can come in the late afternoon, as the sun gradually sets behind the mountains, casting a golden glow over the surroundings.

6. Kim Lien Wharf (Cầu Cảng Kim Liên)

This spot is a straight concrete road leading directly to the sea, offering a breathtaking natural landscape with an expansive view of the romantic and picturesque bay stretching to the horizon. Despite being situated along National Highway 1A and relatively close to residential areas, the area surrounding Kim Lien Wharf remains relatively untouched, making it an ideal sanctuary for those seeking a peaceful escape on the outskirts of the city to embark on their exploration and sightseeing adventures.

Kim Lien Wharf provides a serene retreat away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It offers a tranquil environment where you can unwind and connect with nature's beauty. Whether you're strolling along the shore, enjoying the gentle sea breeze, or simply sitting by the water's edge, Kim Lien Wharf offers a sense of calm and tranquility that allows you to relax and rejuvenate your mind and soul. It's a perfect spot to spend quality time with your loved ones or friends, immersing yourselves in the peaceful ambiance and creating beautiful memories together.
