Friday Morning 76: The Portrait of a Global Citizen

Tubudd
This Friday Morning's guest speaker is Dr. & MC Kim Nguyen Bao, a prominent figure in International Relations at the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam and a celebrated MC who recently graced the stage at the Gala WeChoice Awards 2023. With his deep knowledge of international relations and politics along with the eloquence skill from his MC job, he navigated attendees through a profound exploration of how to become a global citizen.

Understanding Global Citizenship

The session commenced with a profound exploration of the concept of global citizenship. Mr. Bao, drawing upon UNESCO's authoritative definition, painted a vivid picture of global citizenship as a profound sense of belonging to a broad community of shared humanity. It's a notion that emphasizes the interconnectedness and interdependence across economic, political, socio-cultural, and cultural realms, spanning from local to global spheres. Through his lucid exposition, Dr. Kim Nguyen Bao illuminated the simplicity inherent in the concept, emphasizing that a global citizen is not necessarily someone traversing the globe, but rather an individual deeply invested in and concerned about global issues.

3 Qualities of a Global Citizen

Dr. Kim Nguyen Bao emphasized three critical attributes that make up a global citizen: knowledge, skills, and mindset.

Knowledge:

Tubudd's members were urged to cultivate a deep understanding of technological advancements and global affairs that are happening at the moment, thus applying that knowledge to developing Tubudd's services, especially our app. He referenced Ngo Di Lan's insightful work "1% a Day," advocating for continuous learning and cultivating a global mindset that extends beyond local concerns. Mentioning the current situation when there is intense technological competition between superpowers, Vietnam as a developing country has to strive to advance in terms of technology to pave the way the economic development.

Skills:

In this ever-changing world, Mr. Bao emphasizes the importance of improving your skills every day, not only in the professional field but also in soft skills to deal with daily situations. One of the most important soft skills is teamwork, which in his opinion is not only about working with each other but more about understanding your coworkers. In order to do that, you need to understand yourself and gather comprehensive information about the person you are dealing with to work out the possible solutions. This is also one of the skills he has been using as a professional MC when approaching any new situation.

Talking about language proficiency in the current globalized world, Mr. Bao emphasized a second language was positioned not only as a skill but a practical tool for effective communication in a global context. Additionally, becoming a global citizen requires international experience. Though you do not necessarily need to travel abroad, actively emerging into an international environment such as working at a foreign company, joining an international organization, going for exchange programs or making new international friends are necessary for a global citizen to get a broader perspective and fostering cross-cultural understanding.

Mindset Preparation:

Most importantly, a global citizen has to acquire an innovative fresh mindset:

- Openness and Confidence:
Authenticity and self-assurance were underscored as foundational to global citizenship. He encouraged us to cultivate a mindset of openness and confidence, enabling them to engage meaningfully with diverse perspectives.

- Flexibility and Adaptability:
The ability to leverage personal resources and adapt to changing circumstances was emphasized. He gave an example of how a small country like Bhutan still holds great power, which is from its flexible diplomatic strategies when bordering with 2 superpowers like China and India. That is to say, flexibility and adaptability are qualities that are necessary for Vietnamese when coming to the global arena.

- Curiosity and Eagerness to Learn:
A thirst for exploration and a passion for lifelong learning were extolled as virtues of the global citizen. When a war happens on the other side of the globe, why did it happen, who are suffering? These are the questions a global citizen should always wonder and seek a reasonable answer.

- Cultural Immersion:
He highlighted the transformative power of cultural immersion in fostering empathy and understanding across cultural boundaries.

- Perception of Opportunities and Challenges:
While it is important to analyze challenges as opportunities for growth and innovation, it is important to have proactive engagement and get into action instead of thinking.
