Friday Morning 62: Cross-cultural communication in Vietnam

Ann
We're honored to introduce our esteemed guest, Mr. Charlie Win, an American who has not only made Vietnam his home but has become an active contributor to the country's cultural landscape. Having lived in Vietnam for a remarkable 13 years, he has not merely adapted to the Vietnamese way of life but has become a vibrant part of it. Eating Vietnamese food, conversing fluently in Vietnamese, collaborating with Vietnamese colleagues, and actively promoting Vietnam's image to the world, Mr. Win embodies the essence of cross-cultural immersion.

The workshop unfolded with a keen focus on the intricate dynamics of cross-cultural communication, specifically tailored to the Vietnamese context. Mr. Win's narrative was not a discourse on theories but a living testimony to the daily dance of understanding, acceptance, and mutual respect that defines his life in Vietnam.

1. Why Vietnam: A story of love.

Mr. Win's decision to stay in Vietnam was driven by a simple word: love. He found a profound connection to the country, its vibrant culture, its people who always smile and welcome a foreign person like him. His personal stories resonated with the audience, offering a glimpse into the unique charm that has made Vietnam a home away from home.

2. Navigating Difficulties and Culture Shocks:

Coming from a modern country, Charlie was astounded by many things in Vietnam, for example, the ordinary motorcycles carrying tons of cargo, and even goldfish. Talking about culture shocks in Vietnam, he highlighted that daily life isn't just about culture shock but also encompasses what he referred to as "life shock," moments that leave individuals dumbfounded by the intricacies of life. To him, there is no culture that is better or worse, there are just differences and what we should do is to accept and try to understand each other.

Insights into Communication:

One of the workshop's focal points was communication in a high-context culture. Mr. Win shared valuable insights into navigating conversations in Vietnam where much of the meaning lies beneath the surface. He humorously equated understanding the high-context culture of Vietnam to trying to understand a woman – a metaphor that captured the subtlety and complexity of Vietnamese communication.

3. Communication Across Cultures

Mr. Win provided practical lessons on communicating with people from different cultures. Finding common ground emerged as a key strategy to foster new understanding, while acceptance, both of others and of problems, was emphasized as the crucial first step towards finding solutions in communication. He urged the audience to make no assumptions and to be patient in deciphering the most effective ways to interact with one another.

4. Lessons for Vietnam in a Changing World

The workshop expanded its scope to consider broader lessons for Vietnam amidst the rapidly changing global landscape. Mr. Win underscored the importance of reassessing values and institutions in the face of rising Asia, global conflicts, technological shifts, and globalization. He advocated for a delicate balance – accepting new changes and embracing globalization while safeguarding the nation's unique identity, values, and beliefs.
