Vietnam: A Friendly Place for LGBTQ+

Vietnam is a country that has made significant strides in recent years towards being more inclusive and accepting of the LGBTQ+ community. Despite some traditional values, Vietnam has become a popular destination for LGBTQ+ travelers, and it has established itself as one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly countries in Asia.

1. Legal Protections for LGBTQ+ Individuals

In 2015, the Vietnamese government removed a ban on same-sex marriage, and in 2022, The Ministry of Health stated that being LGBTQ+ is "is entirely not an illness” so it “cannot be ‘cured’ nor need[s] to be ‘cured’ and cannot be converted in any way”. These steps are major milestones in ensuring legal protections for LGBTQ+ individuals in Vietnam. Additionally, Vietnam has laws prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation, and this is enforced in many areas of life, including in employment, housing, and education.

2. LGBTQ+ Community Events

Vietnam has a growing LGBTQ+ community, and there are many events and activities that cater to the needs and interests of LGBTQ+ individuals. Some of the most popular community events in Vietnam include:

Pride Parades

Pride parades are annual events that celebrate LGBTQ+ identities, culture, and rights. Vietnam has several pride parades, including Hanoi Pride and HCMC Pride, which are held in November and August, respectively. These events typically feature colorful parades, music performances, speeches, and other activities that promote LGBTQ+ visibility and awareness.

Vietnam hosts several film festivals that feature LGBTQ+ films and documentaries. One of the most popular events is the Hanoi International Queer Film Week, which showcases films from around the world that focus on LGBTQ+ themes and issues.

3. Public Attitudes towards LGBTQ+ Individuals

Vietnam is a relatively conservative society, and traditional values and norms still play a significant role in shaping public attitudes towards LGBTQ+ individuals. However, there has been a noticeable shift in attitudes towards the LGBTQ+ community in recent years, and many people have become more accepting and supportive. 4. Queer culture in big cities

Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) and Hanoi are two of the most LGBTQ+ friendly cities in Vietnam, with vibrant queer cultures and many LGBTQ+ bars and clubs.

In Ho Chi Minh City, the LGBTQ+ scene is centered around the areas of District 1 and District 3, where you can find several gay bars, nightclubs, and saunas. One of the most popular bars is Republic Lounge, which is located in the heart of District 1 and offers a lively and welcoming atmosphere. Other popular venues include Thi Bar, which is known for its drag shows and karaoke nights, and Nam Thanh, a local bar with a friendly vibe and cheap drinks.

In Hanoi, the LGBTQ+ scene is centered around the Old Quarter and the West Lake area, where you can find several gay bars and clubs. One of the most popular venues is GC Bar, which is located in the Old Quarter and is known for its fun atmosphere and friendly staff. Another popular bar is Savage, which is located in the West Lake area and offers a more upscale vibe with craft cocktails and live music.

It's worth noting that, while LGBTQ+ bars and clubs are becoming more common in Vietnam, some venues may not be as visible or open as others, and it's important to be mindful of cultural norms and potential discrimination. However, overall, HCMC and Hanoi offer welcoming and vibrant queer cultures that are worth exploring for LGBTQ+ travelers.

Overall, Vietnam is a country that has made significant progress towards being a more inclusive and welcoming place for LGBTQ+ individuals. While there are still challenges and areas for improvement, the legal protections, vibrant nightlife, and shifting public attitudes towards the community are all positive signs. LGBTQ+ travelers to Vietnam can feel safe and welcomed, knowing that they can enjoy all that the country has to offer without fear of discrimination or persecution.
