Balut is a developing duck embryo which is boiled and consumed from the shell. The origin of Balut is the Philippines. People choose the eggs from 16 to 20 days for cooking. It means the embryo is duck-like or even the eyes, beaks and feathers are formed. Some people realize that they are chewing on a duckling. This is a reason why it is considered to be one of the creepy Vietnamese foods although it is very delicious and nutrient.
2. Medicinal liquor
Medicinal liquor is also known as “Spirulina”. Its ingredients include herbs or raw animals which are soaked in high-alcohol concentration. It is used as a medicine and very popular in Vietnamese culture. But in foreign countries, they feel very strange and horrible. A foreigner said that Vietnamese can soak up anything from tiger bone glue, horses glue to turtle shells, snakes, seahorses, scorpions, or animal organs including the blood of snakes, bile bear, the brain of monkeys, etc.
3. Nereididae sandworm
Nereididae sandworm is made from sandworm, sometimes called eggplant sandworm. It is one of the special fried dishes in the North of Vietnam. Sandworms have oblong shapes with the length of one finger and thousands of legs. This is what makes people afraid. Although its appearance is not attractive, its taste is so good that everyone wants to order it in the next times.
People only find out Sandworm on certain days of the year when the water rises over the dry land. In Tra Vinh Province, sandworm is also used as a sandworm sauce with deep and delicious flavor.
This is rich in protein. Therefore, it may not be suitable for people who have just got sick, asthma, allergic history, stomach dyspepsia, and especially pregnant women.
4. Blood soup
Blood soup is a fresh dish of Vietnamese people. The processing varies on regions. The raw material is the blood of animals which are freshly mixed with some fish sauce or salted water. After that, chopsticks are used to prevent blood from freezing before mixing with meat and cartilage.
Blood soup is also very diverse including goose blood soup, crab blood soup, goat blood soup, snake blood soup, and duck blood soup. However, the most common ones are chicken blood soup and duck blood soup.
Blood soup is popular to many eateries along the roadside restaurants in Vietnam. However, because the blood is not processed, it looks like scared and unhealthy.
5. Larvae coconut worm
Larvae coconut worm are the larvae of Dynastinae – a specialty in Southwest Vietnam. The most popular dish made from Larvae coconut worm is to eat with chili sauce without cooking. The worm is still wiggling in your bowl. People will use chopsticks and pick it up the mouth. It tastes as fatty as egg yolk gradually dissolving in the oral cavity.
