Just so you know, Hai Phong is one of the best places in Vietnam that is famous of its magnificent landscapes and delicious food.
About 120 km away to the east of Hanoi, step off the busy track and take a-day trip to Hai Phong to seek for the real authentic food, which, just by a look, can make your mouth water… and more importantly, it takes you just $35 to eat like a local here.
There’s no better place to dig in to a wonderful food tour in Vietnam than going to a market, and so is Hai Phong. Let’s start our day in Cat Bi market!
Bánh bèo – The authentic sticky cake only in Hai Phong.
(Avarage cost: $0,5 per dish)
Some says that Banh beo in Hai Phong is pretty much like Banh gio in Hanoi because they are all grabbed in banana leaves and the basic ingredients inside are similar. But actually, this dish of the city of seaports has much more special taste. The soft and odorous outside well-cooked flour, together with the sweetness of meat dumpling, dipping into spicy sauce made from stewed bones can bring you the feeling that you may remember for the rest of your life.
Egg Coffee – One of the best desserts in Vietnam.
(Average cost: $1 per cup)
Egg Coffee actually is a Hanoi specialty, but it’s also well-served right here in Hai Phong in which a creamy soft, meringue-like egg white foam is perched on dense Vietnamese coffee.
There are hot and cold versions. The former is served as a a yellow concoction in a small glass. It’s consumed with a spoon and tastes almost like a coffee flavored ice cream — more like a dessert than coffee.
The hot version comes resting in a small dish of hot water to maintain its temperature. The strong coffee taste at the bottom of the cup seeps through the egg — the yellow layer on top — and is quite thick and sweet, though not sickly.
