5 Southwest specialties fruit visitors must try

Southwest Vietnamese fruit is not only famous for its various tastes, but also for its special flavor. Traveling to the Southwest in the summer to enjoy the fruit is even more interesting. Let’s take a look at the following Southwest fruit specialties:

1. Ri6 Durian in Vinh Long Province

There is a special and delicious fruit which is the gift of nature to the local fertile land. It is named after Mr. Sau Ri inhabited in Phuoc Dinh Hamlet, Binh Hoa Phuoc Commune, Long Ho District, Vinh Long Province in 1990. Unlike other common durians, the Ri6 durian brings to the guests the exotic feelings. When peeling off the outer shell, it is easy to see the yellow, dry, non-sticky, moderately sweet, and fatty pulp and incredibly seductive scent.

2. Makapuno in Tra Vinh Province

Makapuno is considered to be a unique fruit in the west of Vietnam. It can only be grown in Cau Ke District, Tra Vinh Province.

Makapuno in Tra Vinh features soft and spongy coconut shell, fragrant, delicious and congealed coconut water, although its appearance is not different significantly. Each coconut tree has only about 20-25% of Makapuno, the remaining ones are normal coconuts, so this fruit becomes even more special.

To enjoy, visitors have to cut coconut into two parts, prepare the water container and use a spoon to scrape copra. The scraped copra is put into the blender, adding sugar, milk, and some ice.

3. Sweet tangerine in Tra Vinh Province

Sweet tangerines are grown in Long Tri Village and some other places. Unlike ordinary tangerines, Tra Vinh tangerines have large and yellow incubated fruit, shiny shell, succulent, and sweet flavor.

With Tra Vinh tangerines, the local people can eat fresh, make canned food, make jam, soft drink, soak alcohol, etc. with nutritious effects on our health, especially our skin in dry weather season.

4. Longan (Dimocarpus longan Lour) in Vung Tau Province

Longan (Dimocarpus longan Lour) is originated from the alluvial soil of Ba Ria – Vung Tau. This fruit was “discovered” in a fruit contest organized by the Southern Fruit Research Institute (SOFRI) more than ten years ago. Thanks to that finding, Longan is widely known as one of the few varieties featuring compared to other varieties. When riping, the Longan is dark yellow, thick, crunchy, and very sweet flesh. At present, this species is planted in many areas namely Xuyen Moc, Dat Do, Long Thanh, and Long Dien.

5. Lo Ren Star apple in Tien Giang Province

Coming to Chau Thanh District, Tien Giang Province, visitors should enjoy the famous fruit – Lo Ren Star apple. This species was developed by a blacksmith in his garden. Because of a delicious fruit, it was good for the villagers to grow.

Lo Ren Star apple appears in the round and white shape. We can see the thin shell, small seeds, thick pulp when it is ripe. To enjoy Lo Ren Star apple properly, before eating, visitors have to use his hands to round and squeeze to soften the fruit. After pulling the stalk, there will be a stream of white milk that is delicious, sweet, and cool. At present, Lo Ren Star apple is grown in many communes including Kim Son, Phu Phong, Vinh Kim, Long Long, Dong Hoa, and Long Hung, etc.
